Google promises to “cloak” user IDs

Sounds good on the surface, but note the following paragraphs (below), which suggest to me that the authorities could still identify you as being the user 1-in-256 machines engaged in some nefarious activity. And that’s *if* the government permits that level of “anonymization” to occur.Rather than the “cloak of anonymity” this AP reporter refers to, I see it as more as an “impression” of the same.

Google is, after all, seeking to do more business with the U.S. government.

Authorities still could demand to review personal information before Google purges it or take legal action seeking to force the company to keep the data beyond the new time limits.
Under its new standards, Google will wipe out eight bits of the Internet protocol, or IP, address that identifies the origin of specific search requests. After the IP addresses are altered, the information will be linked to clusters of 256 computers instead of just a single machine.
