Pot kills superbugs

(Feed you head, kill bacteria. Photo: American Chemical Society)
Several compounds in cannabis are known to kill bacteria. Now Italian scientists believe pot can take on today’s superbugs.
Anti-bacterial cannabinoids might also “provide a more environmentally-friendly alternative to synthetic antibacterial substances now widely used in personal care items, including soaps and cosmetics,” according to an announcement from the American Chemical Society.
The ACS also suggests that marijuana-derived meds can be made without THC, pot’s primary psychoactive substance.
Antibacterial Cannabinoids from Cannabis sativa: A Structure−Activity Study
Marijuana (Cannabis sativa) has long been known to contain antibacterial cannabinoids, whose potential to address antibiotic resistance has not yet been investigated. All five major cannabinoids (cannabidiol (1b), cannabichromene (2), cannabigerol (3b), Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (4b), and cannabinol (5)) showed potent activity against a variety of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) strains of current clinical relevance.
well that’s no fun
Another reason they don’t want it legalized. At the bottom of this story I thought it amusing there are ads by google for rehabs. Rehab for pot??? No need, just stop. Of course you will be thinking you want a joint for awhile but it’s not life threatening as alcohol, meth etc.
I also think it protects us from all the nasty crap this out of control govt. does to us daily.
Cannabis was both a symbol and a major cause of the 60s counterculture, and the industrial military complex will never forgive nor forget.
The partnership for a drug free America was largely comprised of pharmaceutical, alcohol, and textile companies- as in, all the big losers if it were legalized. Thanks for looking out for my health, lying greedy bastards.
No medical value, my ass.
i love you marijuana.
thank you!
Cannabis, the wonder plant.
It’s a painkiller, helps people sleep better, the tincture applied topically will cure muscle and joint pain and many more I can’t think of right now.
You know Canada has the highest rate of pot-smokers in the world?
So, it helps put off the effects of Alzheimer’s in some patients and now shows to be antibacterial in some of the compounds?
Well, surely those with a Congressional health plan will just *have* to see reason, now won’t they? This wouldn’t potentially harm their shares in pharmaceutical companies at all. Nope, no sir.
Ah well. Good for us lawless users to know anyway.
sounds like everyone in here is a marijuana addict. And marijuana is now one of the top reasons why people go to rehab. When people quit using mj it is proven that they go through about 6 months of depression, sleep deprivation, and low motivation. And people using it under the age of 17 can have life long developmental problems with the brain.
…and thats coming from someone who smokes regularly.
just because you like it doesnt mean you have to turn a blind eye to the negative parts…
qwerty… I quit from smoking every day for six years and other than some awkwardness derived largely from the social elements of smoking, I didn’t have a problem, so before you such a claim, leave room for variation of effects on users. As for your 17 year old statistic, there is no genetic threshold that appears magically at everyone’s 17th birthday. Next time be a little more prudent with your word choice before you come with that ask Mr. Wizard bullshit. (lightly edited by mark)
I guess you know what you are talking about and the professors in my medical classes don’t?
furthermore you are the one in a million person. Just like the guy that smokes 3 packs of cigarettes a day and drinks for 50 years but doesnt die from either.
26 years of smoking pot every day and when it runs out i feel no effects. I want some but i do not need it.
What i do have negative way i get broncitice from smoking too much and some times cough up a lung. then use the green dragon to fly. alcohol tincture. one eye dropper full in a soda and you buzz for 4-5 hours.
qwerty-
I have smoked pot every day for decades and I am totally not an addict.
NO WEED FOR YOU! WEED MAKES PEOPLE TURN INTO DIRTY LAZY HIPPIES. AND COCAINE MAKES BLACK MEN RAPE WHITE WOMEN.
qwerty: If your professor disagree, then maybe they know something the Supreme Court doesn’t??? Hmm??? You should stop listening to what people tell you and learn to think for yourself.

G’day Qwerty,
“the professors in my medical classes” are indoctrinated into a belief system. They mostly lack any form of free thought and merely bow down to the policy makers and those that fund them.hey have been domesticated and will not bite the hand that feeds them.
Marijuana being ‘bad for you’ is merely one of the lies that the ‘medical mafia’ perpetuates. Before you sell your soul to your profession, maybe you could do some independent research on such issue as, vaccinations, cancer, nutricide, flouride, etc, that the ‘medical mafia’ have been lying about.
Of course, you could merely repeat all of the lies so that you can show what a faithful follower you are so that you can earn your ‘blood money’ from them.
Or you could have a look at these links and start thinking for yourself.

There’s a few to get you started.
“NO WEED FOR YOU! WEED MAKES PEOPLE TURN INTO DIRTY LAZY HIPPIES. AND COCAINE MAKES BLACK MEN RAPE WHITE WOMEN.” Are you kidding me? I know more Doctors, Lawyers, and Engineers who are pot smokers then anything else, granted thats the circles I run in. The lazy stuff is a crock. Lazy people who smoke pot are lazy etc.
The coke comment is crazy racist.
As for the bow to the supreme court nonsense please save it. Either political side should be for leagalization. The right because it should be a personal desicion of liberty or at least a States issue to deside and the Left because of the injustice of criminalization and the lack of harm caused by consumption.
I quit and outside of a few weeks of adjustment I was and am cool and did not need any stinking help. 1000 times easier then nicotine. I stopped out of fear of legal penalties and to give my lungs a break. Crimes are not committed for pot that are not $ related because of criminalization and no one has ever died from it, unlike aspirin.

Clorox does too, but we don’t rub it on our skin, inhale it, and drink it in large quantities.
Qwerty…You don’t listen to anyone associated with the school system/government about weed. (Lightly edited–mb)
Legalize it. Legalize it, tax it, reduce our national deficit to damn near zero.
I’ve been a nurse for nearly 20 years. There are far worse things people become addicted to while receiving treatment for various diseases.
Cannibis is incredibly versatile and has many medical uses. We’re so entrenched now in the “gateway drug” mentality, we cannot bring ourselves to recognize what’s right in front of us. And the image we’ve fostered so hard for so long is now so implanted in the minds of everyone, it’s going to make it very difficult to just turn around and say “oh, how about that….it actually CAN have good uses….”
The criminalization stems from racism towards Mexicans in the southwest. Then propaganda, the sixties counterculture, then the “just say no” 80s up until now.
The thing is.. it’s nearly legal now. It’s not that hard to get. In most states it’s not a felony to possess.
What prohibition did in the 20s was to create moonshine.. Marijuana prohibition has done the same creating the potent varieties that’s so enjoyed today.
government screws up everything.
Marijuana as a gateway drug makes me laugh. The only people I know who were serious pot-smokers then took to other drugs wanted to use those other drugs in the first place. Or, they were drunk.
Count me in as one of the “one in a million” crowd too, then qwerty. I also quit “cold turkey” after smoking (consistently) for 15 years and had NO negative side effects other than the different cultural/society adjustment. I can speak for MANY, not all, that you DO NOT become chemically addicted to marijuana. WHETHER OR NOT YOU SMOKE OR NOT IS ALL ABOUT WILL POWER AND PERSONAL CHOICE…PERIOD!
Spent a lifetime in law enforcement. They could not prohibit alcohol and will not be able to prohibit pot. Money spent to arrest and imprison pot smokers is wasted and could be much better used. You are right most weed use is in the professional arena and tends to demonstrate that pot is the recreational drug of choice for the well educated, I wonder how you would explain that.
all i know is that the government legalized alcohol and cigarettes, 2 big contributors to death everywhere.
i trust bud too much to consider it a threat or a bother.
ill decide for myself just as anyone should
the comment from carolina maine is the most lame argument I have ever heard no we dont rub bleach on our skin or drink it in large quanities but the fact remains that NOBODY has EVER died from cannabis and many people die every year from alcohol ,cigarettes,
and pharmacutical drugs.
The reason these NATURALLY GROWING drugs are outlawed is because the north won the civil war and outlawed slavery.
Think about it.
Let’s be honest Pot has been on this earth for many years and has served many purposes from medicinal to spiritual. It does not surprise me that there are new developments, however when is the government going to discover the benefits and legalize it?
Lets really get honest and admit that the reason most drugs are illegal is that too many officials are making too much money protecting the distribution of these drugs. If you remove the crooked officials from the cop on the take to the judge who hands out bail so the accused can flee for a fee and you might stand a chance of educating America to the truth about drugs.
Money spent to incarcerate most low level dealers and most users is wasted. Millions could be safely released from prison with few ill effects to the nation. Look all across the USA, money talks truth walks. Some poor slob works 60 hours a week, smokes a few joints on the weekend and they bust down his door, terrify his family and cart him off to jail for years. The public officials who rake in millions are untouchable. These are not isolated incidents but everyday occurrences.
Ive smoked pot for five years and gave it up when my girlfriend did not approve anymore. It’s really not that bad, on the same level as alcohol with the buzz. The cost for law enforcement is unreasonable and it should really be legalized to save costs. Check it.
http://uwnews.washington.edu/ni/article.asp?articleID=25054
The real reason pot became illegal in the first place was most definitely because of pharmaceutical companies, but originally most of the propaganda was started by the Hearst dynasty, the Rockefellers and the tobacco giants. The marijuana tax act and later the harrison narcotic act, which made it a schedule 1 drug and felony to posess. At the time pot was Americas largest cash crop(surprisingly it still is californias) and they lobbied the government to create propaganda converse to all of the things peoples used it for because it stood to make their obsolete technologies completely useless. Hence why paper is made from trees, oil is pulled from the ground, america is deeply entrenched in nicotine addiction and there is an artificial drug for everything. Everything we know about pot from the government and anyone else in those sectors is a complete and utter LIE! So wake up people and stop living the lies they perpetuate to control us. Just look at the state of this country at present and you can see how insidious the black government and the rest of power are and plan to stay.
Ok there is a lot of debate about this. Much of the intensity and bitterness of the issue comes from the fact that BOTH sides are unwilling to admit they are wrong, or in the least not entirely correct. The more conservative crowd will not admit that pot COULD have benefits. However, the more liberal side will not admit that pot COULD have draw backs. Everyone is too set on their ways, and too concerned with being 100% correct. The day we learn to truly compromise, is the day pot will be legal. Then again, its also the day MLK, Gandhi, Mother Teresa, and John Lennon will all jump out of their graves and do a jig.
there is nothing, absolutely nothing wrong with smoking pot
personal decision,
and if your someone that doesnt do it and bash the people that do,
THEN EXPLETIVE DELETED(lightly edited–mb)
Thanks for proving me right
IDK, marijuana does, indeed have drawbacks, just as does any other drug. One thing I’d like to see discussed is the possibility of using THC in a concentrated form; it’d be far better than smoking. Obviously this causes as much harm as do cigarettes. In an extracted form, THC could be far more useful to the medical community.
I agree, THC could be just as usful to the health professionals community as some of the drugs they currently use. It just needs the R&D. I would hope that in that R&D they might find a way to make it smokeless, then that would take away one of the serious drawbacks.

Smoking cannabis is not the only way to ingest this wonderful herb. Yes I said herb because this is a plant - not some man made chemical/drug.
IDK, this isn’t about “sides”. You are attempting to make this into an us and them scenario, when in fact it is about freedom to ingest into your body that which you so desire to. While ever people are told what to do by The Hierarchy Enslaving You (T.H.E.Y.), eventually the people will revolt against this enslavement of their personal freedom to decide what is or is not beneficial for themselves.
How many people that consume marijuana do you know that attempt to enforce consumption upon others ???
But on the other hand, we have millions upon millions of people that attempt to enforce abstention upon those that do consume marijuana. Not only through verbal means, but by making out that the individual consuming this herb is somehow a criminal and has a debt to pay to society for ‘daring’ to make their own choices about what they put into their own body. They also lie about this herb with the propaganda that they indoctrinate the population with.
Funny that some people are bitter about the attempt to take away their freedom of choice.
“Isn’t it curious that American drug companies and pharmacist groups* supply almost half the funding for the 4,000 “Families Against Marijuana” type organizations in America? The other half is supplied by Action (a federal VISTA agency) and by tobacco companies like Philip Morris, and by liquor and beer makers like Anheuser Busch, Coors, etc., or as a “public service” by the ad agencies that represent them.”

The facts of the matter are as follow…hemp can be used for gasoline, pain reliever,anti-depressants,textiles,paper,spiritual enlightenment.Something like 54 counties around the world have legalized MJ and their crime rates have dropped. One more thing, when your children find out that they CAN smoke a joint and still function they will probably assume they have been lied to about cocaine, heroin, meth etc.being so dangerous as well.
Huh! So THAT’S why I’m so healthy

qwerty said:
“sounds like everyone in here is a marijuana addict.” - Is there even such a thing as a “marijuana addict”? I don’t think so. There isn’t any such thing as “marijuana withdrawal”, and as such, there cannot be “marijuana addiction”. People need to learn that the psychological desire for a drug isn’t the same as a physical addiction. Hence, “marijuana addiction” is not an “addiction” at all.
“And marijuana is now one of the top reasons why people go to rehab.” - Well, if that’s true, then we live in a sad age indeed, seeing as marijuana is not addictive. It’s especially sad when so many people have addictions to so many other substances that are far worse (e.g. alcohol and tobacco).
“When people quit using mj it is proven that they go through about 6 months of depression, sleep deprivation, and low motivation.” - Proven according to who? I doubt there are any studies to ‘prove’ such a claim as that. And if there are, no doubt they’ve been financed by tobacco and/or pharmaceutical companies. Also, I thought it was the immediate effects of MJ that caused depression and low motivation? Well, that’s what any psychiatrist will tell you, anyway.
“And people using it under the age of 17 can have life long developmental problems with the brain.” - Another claim pulled out of the arse. How is 17 any more meaningful an age than 16, or 18? As another person commented above, there is no genetic cut-off. Whatever study this is from is surely meaningless, if it is from any study at all. Why aren’t all the people who started smoking pot at age 17 walking about as if they have Down Syndrome? Because it has no developmental effects whatsoever. It’s hard to reconcile reality with a single person’s outrageous claims.
“I guess you know what you are talking about and the professors in my medical classes don’t?” - I guess so. Your rhetorical question kinda backfired there, didn’t it?
If your professor (or any other authority figure) was the experimenter in the Milgram experiment, or a confederate in the Asch experiment, I bet you’d conform to their view, thinking you were taking the side of the authoritative “truth”. It disgusts me to think that the next generation of doctors might end up being such close-minded sycophantic idiots, who will inadvertently kill their patients out of sheer ignorance and intellectual laziness. Start thinking for yourself instead of swallowing down the garbage other people want to feed you.
Also… of course crime rates will drop if it’s legalized! What is so hard to understand about this? If something _isn’t a crime_, then nobody will be arrested for it, and then there will be less criminals in jail, yes?
What you’re really trying to say by “decreased crime rates with marijuana decriminalization” is that _violent crime_ has gone down. This is because of the sketchy illegal shipping practices, in which heavily-armed gunmen protect large quantities of drugs. If marijuana were legal, all of the crime-causing aspects of the underworld business would disappear. Selling pot would be a legitimate enterprise, like selling shoes, or perhaps more aptly, beer.
Incidentally, it’s been speculated/proven that if regulated in the same manner as alcohol, marijuana would be harder to access by minors. Conversely, marijuana dealers do not ask for ID when selling marijuana. Yet another benefit of proper regulation of an intoxicating substance.
There is also a more philosophical reason for legalization of marijuana - cognitive liberty - whereby it is an inherent human right to have control over the mental states experienced by one’s brain. But currently, this idea hasn’t been popular - people would much rather tell one another how they ought to feel and think. Kind of a “normative law of cognition”.
Bottom line is, marijuana is less harmful than almost every other drug consumed en masse by our society, so there is no reason why it shouldn’t be legal.
Pot is mentioned in the torah, and probably in the quran. It’s NOT a drug, it’s a plant. It comes from YOUR GOD!! It’s not addictive, it’s easier to quit than alcohol or cigarettes. I personally have now come to the realization that it’s going to save me from being an alcoholic. My father was, so was his father, and yet when I smoke I DON’T drink. I believe that pot should be legal, for the economy, for medicine, for personal freedom. People who think pot should stay illegal, are nothing more than NAZIS. They want absolute control. It doesn’t destroy societies, it makes them more enlightened.
